Soundtrack of the 90's Pt. I

It's been a minute since I've been on this thing...my apologies! So Turkey Day 2008 has come and gone and its of course good to get a little bit of time off from the daily grind as well.

I'm about to take you on a journey of music from the soundtracks of Black movies from the 90's. I don't know what happened to movies about and by Black folks but there sure were plenty in the 90's, whether it was the hood inspired movies like Menace II Society & Juice, whether it was the chick flicks like Love Jones & Waiting to Exhale or the silly comedies like Don't Be A Menace... & Booty Call, there definitely were a lot of movie releases in the 90's. We really don't have films like that nor do we have soundtracks like there were in the 90's. This is Part I of a two part blog theme because there are way too many good songs from the movies of the 90's.

New Jack City - 1991

Photobucket

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102526/plotsummary

This video is from the pretty light skinned, curly hair brother, Christopher Williams. (This was the time when light skinned was in, lol) "I'm Dreaming".

Menace to Society -1993
Photobucket

"I feel sorry for yo mama!"..."What you say about my mama???!!!"

Streiht up Menace - MC Eiht

Photobucket

Strictly Business was another one of those cute movies and then of course you had Halle Berry playing a non-crackhead or crazy role in this movie, so that's always good, lol.

This right here is classic shit...no matter where and when you play this everyone get's hype. "You Called and Told Me" - Jeff Redd - 1991

Juice - 1992
Photobucket

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104573/plotsummary

I have three videos for this soundtrack...one by the god Rakim, "Know the Ledge" which is the theme of Juice. Another video by Naughty By Nature - "Uptown Anthem" and one by a chick that really didn't make it and I barely remember her having a video for this track, "Is it good to you" Tammy Lucas. Some may remember Heavy D had a song by the same title, same track and hook during the same time.

"Know the Ledge (Juice)" -Rakim

"Uptown Anthem" - Naughty By Nature

"Is It Good To You" Remix - Tammy Lucas

Above the Rim - 1994
Photobucket

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109035/plotsummary

Above the Rim was one of those movies you rarely see on cable, but I thought it was a pretty good flick with 2Pac and Duane Martin. The soundtrack was pretty hot too. I have few videos for this one because there were a lot of decent songs like Regulate with Warren G & Nate "I sing all of the hooks" Dogg representing the G-Funk Era, Afro Puffs - hey rock with ya bad self, Anything by SWV and a song that some may not remember Old Time Sakes by one hit wonder Sweet Sable.

"Regulate" - Warren G feat. Nate Dogg

"Old Time Sake" Sweet Sable

"Pour a Lil Liquor" 2Pac

Anything"- SWV

"Afro Puffs" - Lady of Rage

Don't Be Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood
Photobucket

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116126/plotsummary

This was one of the silliest movies ever made, but was funny as hell as it parodied every early 90's flick from Boyz in the Hood to Menace II Society. The soundtrack was alright too. Check out L-O-S-T B-O-Y-Z representing South Jamaica, Queens and Joe's "All the Things" videos.

Renee - Lost Boyz

"All The Things (Your Man Won't Do) - Joe

Watch more R&B music videos at EZ-Tracks

The Nutty Professor - 1996
Photobucket

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117218/plotsummary

"Touch Me, Tease Me" Case

**BONUS**

House Party - 1990-1991
Photobucket

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099800/plotsummary

This is some more classic fun in the 90's type movie and music. I got a clip from the movie too with the dancing sequence...good times.

"Ain't Gonna Hurt Nobody" - Kid N Play

House Party Clip

"Funhouse" - Kid N Play

That's all til next time.

ctalley's Hip Hop Honors Pt. 1

So VH1's Hip Hop Honors aired last night and I didn't realize that this was the 5th year anniversary for the show. Man, I remember when VH1 only showed Celine Dion videos...then one day, they started airing Flavor of Love and it all went down hill from there. But I must give VH1 props for evolving with the times and pop culture. Hip Hop is Pop Culture, no matter how much we don't want to admit it. I am sure some of us miss the days when Hip Hop was underground and too gritty & grimey for the mainstream.

But it's great that VH1 supports & celebrates great artists in Hip Hop. My friend and I was just talking about the line up of honorees for 2008 and we weren't very impressed. Well besides the obvious, Slick Rick, De La... Though there are some Honorees from the past and even 2008 that I may not agree with; this video blog is Part 1 of those honorees that I think definitely deserved the honor.

Photobucket

So you know I rep the BX hard (even though there isn't really much here, but a place to rest) , BUT this is where Hip Hop began, regardless of the naysayers from Queens always hating("Manhattan keeps on making it, Brooklyn keeps on taking it, Bronx keeps on creating it and Queens keeps on faking it!") ...lol

Love's Gonna Get Cha - Boogie Down Productions (BDP)/KRS One - 2004 Honoree

"What you say to me is still paper thin, in one ear and right out the other..." -
MC Lyte - Paper Thin - 2006 Honoree

R-A-W! Saw him perform last year at the Throwback Comes to Harlem show at the Apollo, dude still got it. Ain't No Half Steppin' - Big Daddy Kane - 2005 Honoree

This is so appropriate for the time right now, we have to Fight the Power on Nov. 4th and get this fool out of office!

Fight the Power - Public Enemy - 2004 Honorees

Now I chose this Whodini video because dude is wearing the tightest white shorts. Now I know tight was in back then but damn! And check out lil Jermaine Dupri with the mean Jheri curl...a good look...lol and I think he is the same height too...

Freaks Come Out at Night - Whodini - 2007 Honorees

Whodini - Freaks Come Out At Night - Whodini

Ending this one with the one and only Slick Rick the Ruler - Teeange Love - 2008 Honoree

Make sure you catch the debate tonight, one month until election day!

Native Tongues Edition

Thanks DJ Sphere for the inspiration to put this one together...

Taking it to the late 80's/early 90's with this entry. This is one of the moments in Hip Hop where afrocentricity lived, where abstract, open minded lyricism flourished over jazz influenced beats! This is when Hip Hop was fun!

The Native Tongues included:
A Tribe Called Quest
De La Soul
Jungle Brothers
Queen Latifah
Monie Love
Leaders of the New School

Buddy - When I was younger, I had no clue what the hell buddy was, eventually I figured it out...lol, here's the whole crew in Buddy

"The Queen is hyped up...L-A-T-I-F-A-H in command!"

Taking it to the Queens side - This one is from one of my favorite ATCQ's albums, Midnight Maurauders. Electric Relaxation...I remember listening to this song in 7th grade on a school trip on my walkman...lol good times.

De La to the Soul - Me, Myself & I

Wow, Busta still dresses like a wierdo as he does in the Sobb Story - Leaders of the New School video

I would have normally put up Monie in the Middle, but I like the vibe of this one, It's A Shame - Monie Love.

Here we go yo, Here we go yo...

Scenario - A Tribe Called Quest featuring Leaders of the New School

One Love

This is the first entry featuring Whodini's "One Love." We have all experienced this in one point or time in our lives...

Now this one is for those that know what it is like to catch your loved one out with another person...this video is only Oran "Juice" Jones, "Rain"...This chick looked like a hot mess at the end of the video, but was looking fly (for 1986 standards that is) before she was caught out there with the other dude in the "Rain"..."I gave you things you couldn't even pronounce...You without me is like cornflakes without the milk..."...check out this next video from the original OJ...lol

Oran "Juice" Jones - The Rain (1986) -

Now this joint, is that New Jack Swing flava...Guy's "Groove Me"...one of my favorite New Jack Swing songs...to all my NY cats that have checked out the Freedom Fridays party at StarFoods, (now at Canal Room), this is a party favorite of mine...this reminds me of good times...

Groove Me - Guy

That's all for now, but check out a mix dedicated to the Native Tongue's (Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and many more) by my boy, DJ SPHERE (www.momm-ent.com)...take a listen to this mix while you are at work or at home...

Old School Hip-Hop and R&B Blog - Take One

This blog is dedicated to music...Hip-Hop and R&B that is...

Man, when I was younger, I remember taking my parents lil' boombox and stealing their Bobby Brown "Don't Be Cruel" tape and jammin' to it! LOL. And for all my folks in NYC, I remember the video music show, Hot Tracks and of course the lengendary Ralph McDaniel's show, Video Music Box on Ch. 25 (public access that is).

I have tapes and tapes of videos from Video Music Box and the 900 request show called, The Box and I have yet to be able to put that on DVD because of the time intensiveness of it all...but Youtube came along and solved all of that!

So the purpose of this blog is to post Old School Videos and allow you to reminince on the good times...this is for my 25 and up to remember and anyone younger this is a Video Music History lesson before videos were all about money, cars and hoes...ya feel me??

So enjoy...
